What is Oral Appliance Therapy?
Oral appliance therapy involves the selection, fitting, and follow up
care of special dental mouthpieces that are worn in the mouth during
sleep to prevent or control snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.
Dentists are uniquely qualified to perform this treatment since they
are familiar with fitting patients with various types of dental devices.
Oral appliances for snoring and sleep apnea hold the lower jaw forward
during sleep. This widens the airway, keeps the tongue forward, and
prevents the jaw from drooping down and blocking the airway.
Oral appliance therapy is a comfortable, and non-invasive way to treat
snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, and is one of the treatments
recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and the American
Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (
www.aadsm.org).
Oral appliance therapy can help you sleep better, breathe better, and feel better!
